Apply for DCO

FY24 RESERVE DCO SPECIAL DUTY PUBLIC AFFAIRS OFFICER
(RESTRICTED LINE)

This note solicits applications for Reserve Direct Commission Officer (DCO), leading to a commission as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy Reserve, designator 1655 Special Duty (Public Affairs).  Reserve enlisted personnel and civilians who meet eligibility requirements are encouraged to apply.

The Navy Reserve Public Affairs community supports the U.S. Navy's public communication and media engagement efforts.  The Public Affairs team is responsible for the coordination, curation, and dissemination of news and information to internal and external audiences.  Our Public Affairs Officers possess diverse backgrounds as skilled communicators.  Highly competitive candidates have experience advising clients or senior leaders about the dynamic media environment and supporting media engagements or can demonstrate the aptitude to learn and lead in this capacity.  A bachelor's is minimally required.

Prior military experience is not required; we select a diversity of applicants (enlisted and civilian) whose superior performance indicates they are the best qualified based on a number of factors.

The Vice Chief of Information (VCI) conducts an administrative professional review of all applications during an informal selection board.  VCI forwards the recommended selections to NRC, who notifies the applicants of their selection/non-selection via the applicant’s recruiter and/or Commanding Officer.

After being gained as a Selected Reservist, selectees will attend/complete the two-week DCO Indoctrination Course at Newport, RI within one year of commissioning, receive on-the-job training from their assigned unit, and will have the opportunity to attend the Defense Information School (DINFOS) Public Affairs Qualification Course (PAQC-ADL-NR) 6-month on-line course, with the follow-on 2-week resident course (PAQC-ADL-R) at Ft. Meade, MD.

Apply through your Navy Reserve Officer Recruiter or Command Career Counselor.
