The Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Safety Excellence Awards were established to recognize and congratulate those Navy and Marine Corps activities that have demonstrated exceptional and sustained safety excellence. Recognized activities have excelled in improving warfighting and mission readiness through professional risk management in the elimination of preventable deaths, injuries, occupational illnesses, infrastructure and materiel losses, and mission degradation. These awards emphasize the unique importance of safety as a top Department of the Navy priority. 2. The award areas of competition, criteria, formation, and nomination process have been formalized in reference (a). The award categories for the Fiscal Year 2016 awards competition are: Afloat, Ashore, Aviation, Expeditionary, Off-duty Safety, Safety Integration in Acquisition, and Emerging Safety Center of Excellence. 3. Instructions for submitting a nomination package for each of the award categories are available at: www.secnav.navy.mil/eie/Pages /Safety.aspx. Nomination packages that do not include the required content described in reference (a) will not be considered. All nomination packages must be received by April 1, 2017 to receive consideration. Recipients of the SECNAV Safety Excellence Awards will be announced in an ALNAV message in the spring of 2017, and will be recognized at a Washington, DC area ceremony hosted by SECNAV or his representative. 5.
