For 113 Years, the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) has provided financial assistance to Sailors, Marines, their families, widows, and orphans in need. Their programs and services also include educational assistance, budget counseling, thrift shops, and visiting nurses to help address the unique challenges of military life and service. Society offices are located on every major Navy and Marine Corps installation around the globe, and on many of our ships. The society’s 4,000 volunteers and 219 paid employees were there in 2016 for nearly 60,000 Sailors, Marines, Retirees, and Sea-service families and provided more than $45 million in interest-free loans and grants. 2. On March 1, 2017, the active duty fund drive will commence in support of the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. I ask for your backing to ensure another successful fund drive. Your generosity will permit the society to continue operating as the lifeline of support our people need and deserve. The Department of the Navy supports the recommended goal of $12.5 million. While I do expect 100 percent meaningful contact with all our Sailors and Marines, I do not expect any additional fundraising goals to be established. From the top down, I therefore direct that every Sailor and Marine be given the opportunity to learn about the programs and services offered by NMCRS, and to have the opportunity to support that work through allotments and other donation methods. This is an all hands effort. I am confident that, with the enthusiastic support, and leadership participation at every level, our goal is achievable. In support of the fund drive, commanders are authorized the use of appropriated funds for traditional kickoff rallies, and recognition events at the conclusion of the fund drive. Such expenditures must be consistent with limitations on the use of appropriated funds. 3. Released by the Honorable Sean J. Stackley, Acting Secretary of the Navy.// BT #0001 NNNN UNCLASSIFIED//
