SUBJ/FY17 NAVY LEAGUE OF THE UNITED STATES ADMIRAL VERN CLARK AND GENERAL 
JAMES L. JONES SAFETY AWARDS//

RMKS/1.  No one cares for or respects their shipmates more than Sailors, 
Marines, and Department of the Navy (DON) civilians.  Our job is to harness 
that care and respect to constantly improve our safety programs.  In this 
context, I am personally committed to leading the transformation of the DON's 
safety and occupational health programs.  In doing so, I seek to discover and 
benchmark programs that set the standard for world class performance.  I know 
the DON can universally achieve the level of program excellence demonstrated 
by the Admiral Vern Clark and General James L. Jones Safety Award winners, 
and I expect every Sailor, Marine, and civilian to join me in accelerating 
towards our common moral imperative of zero mishaps.

2.  In partnership with the Navy League of the United States, it is my great 
pleasure to announce the Fiscal Year 2017 recipients.  Congratulations to the 
following winners:
    a.  United States Navy:
        Individual:  Mr. Gary D. Snyder, Naval Diving and Salvage
        Training Center, Panama City, FL
        Unit:  Naval Construction Training Center, Port Hueneme, CA
    b.  United States Marine Corps:
        Individual:  HM2 Olusola Adeyemo, USN, First Marine Logistics
        Group, Camp Pendleton, CA
        Unit:  First Reconnaissance Battalion Camp Pendleton, CA

3.  These annual Navy League awards recognize individuals and units that 
foster world class safety programs across the DON that reduce avoidable 
injuries and fatalities.  Recipients were chosen from a stellar group of 
highly competitive nominees.  I commend them for their commitment to safety 
excellence and passion for making risk reduction an inherent part of the DON 
culture.  Their actions no doubt preserved resources, prevented injuries, and 
saved lives.

4.  The awards will be presented at the Navy League's Annual Sea-Air -Space 
Exposition's Secretary of the Navy Luncheon on 11 April 2018.  The exposition 
will be held at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center, National 
Harbor, MD.

5.  Congratulations once again to the winners of this year's awards.  Well 
done to all the commands that participated.
