November 11, 2018 will mark the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended hostilities in World War I (WWI). To mark this anniversary, the United States WWI Centennial Commission is calling on Americans across the nation to toll bells at 1100 on 11 November 2018 in remembrance of those who served in WWI. The tolling of bells is a traditional expression of honor and remembrance, and "Bells of Peace" is a national event to honor the 116,516 Americans who died and over 200,000 who were wounded in the Great War. As members of the WWI Centennial Commission, the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps will participate in this event. 2. Execute a bell ringing ceremony to recognize the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI. 3. Commander's Intent a. Purpose: Recognize the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI. b. Method: Execute a global recognition of Armistice Day through a coordinated Department of the Navy wide bell ringing ceremony. On Sunday, 11 November at 1100, toll your bells 21 times with a five-second interval between each toll. Groups that do not have bells can render the salute by other available means. To maximize participation, units who are unable to conduct the ceremony on 11 November can recognize the anniversary Friday, 9 November or Tuesday, 13 November. Commands are highly encouraged to participate in the bell ringing at the actual date and time, barring existing or emergent operational commitments. c. The theme of the ceremony is Bells of Peace: A National WWI Remembrance. d. End state: Instill in our Sailors, Marines, and the American public the significance of our Navy and Marine Corps history and heritage and to celebrate our victory in WWI. 4. Tasks. Chief of Naval Operations and Commandant of the Marine Corps will delegate the planning and program development for the bell ringing ceremony. 5. Coordinating Instructions. Additional coordinating instructions and tasking to be provided SEPCOR by individual service planning leads as plans develop. 6. Admin a. Commemoration Events. The following events are to be included as operational commitments permit: (1) Bell ringing ceremony. b. Discretionary Commemoration Events. (1) Render salute through other means available. (2) Conduct commemoration on date more favorable to maximize participation. c. Public Affairs (PA) guidance. (1) This is an active PA posture event. (2) PA guidance will be provided SEPCOR. 7.
