As we begin the Department of the Navys Safety Awareness Campaign, I urge every Sailor, Marine, and civilian to keep safety on the forefront of their thoughts and actions. Safety awareness is more than a poster, video, or written message. It goes to the core of our readiness as a force. It is my expectation that all personnel will take this opportunity to consider proper risk management and respect, both personal and professional, for yourself and others. 2. We lose too many of our people each year to mishaps. On average, 122 personnel are killed in on and off-duty mishaps every year, and thousands more are injured. This is unacceptable. 3. We can no longer operate under the banner of business as usual. We need to reinforce a culture of safety and foster an environment that encourages risk management, problem solving, and proactive thinking. I call on all hands to invigorate our level of safety awareness by focusing on four core themes: Be a safety leader, report areas where we can improve, recognize that cutting corners costs lives, and reduce mishaps to improve readiness. 4. The success of this safety campaign hinges on leadership from all personnel and personal interaction. Check in with your teammates, talk about risks involved in tasks on the job and in off-duty activities, show your respect and care about each other. We all have a role to play in creating a culture of safety. When we all move forward together with a sense of urgency and personal accountability, we will come out stronger on the other side. 5. In the end this comes down to trust. I trust that you make the right decisions, with the right amount of risk, to put the fleet, the Department, and the nation first and make us safer, and more ready, every day. 6.
