As the weather improves, we naturally become more active and engaged in outdoor activities such as water sports, camping, golfing, and hiking. While we embrace these and so many other activities, we must mitigate the inherent risks to keep our Sailors, Marines, Civilians, and their families safe. Last year from Memorial Day to Labor Day, we unfortunately lost 21 of our fellow warriors to preventable mishaps. Of those fatalities, 17 were on the roads in private automobiles or motorcycles. Each of those losses is tragic to families, friends, and to our Navy and Marine Corps team. 2. Aggressively managing risk is a critical necessity as we approach the summer season. To achieve this, it is essential that we re -emphasize two of our Safety Campaign Themes: a. Every Sailor, Marine, and Civilian Cares Enough to be a Safety Leader b. "Cutting Corners Costs Lives 3. I expect leaders at all levels to take a proactive approach to be aware, socialize, and thoroughly brief the summer hazards to all command personnel. Incorporate individual accountability and responsibility. Get to know your people and help them make wise choices both on and off the job. The summer is a fantastic time of the year to refresh, reflect, and spend time with family and friends. I encourage each of you to get out and take advantage of the opportunities the season provides. Have a plan, have a buddy, and if you choose to drink, drink responsibly. Let’s also remember all those who are deployed, as they may be limited in their ability to enjoy the season to the same degree that we can. We all appreciate their professionalism and dedication to the mission. 4. I continue to be impressed by the caliber of our people and the lethality that we bring to the fight. I am humbled to be your Secretary of the Navy and look forward to continuing to serve alongside you. Be safe and enjoy your summer! 5.
