It is once again that time of year when we celebrate the holidays and the events that surround our traditions. It is a joyous season to spend time with family and friends, reflect on all that we have accomplished over the past year, and prepare for the challenges that lay ahead in 2020. 2. As the Acting Secretary of the Navy, I have witnessed incredible achievements by our Sailors, Marines, and Civilians to foster peace, provide presence, and ensure stability. I am proud of all your accomplishments achieved through teamwork, flawless execution, and commitment to our mission. 3. While the holidays provide a unique opportunity to celebrate, I ask each of you to apply vigilance, forethought, and sound decision-making. The hazards that are common to the holidays span from travel related fatigue, electrical fires, to falls from ladders, and irresponsible use of alcohol, among others. Sadly, in 2018, we lost six of our fellow warriors between Thanksgiving and the New Year, four due to private motor vehicle mishaps and one due to off-duty recreational activities. We need to be especially watchful of our fellow Marines, Sailors, and Civilians as, historically, the holiday season is a time of cheer, but also a time of depression for many in our ranks. Every loss is a tragedy for families, friends, and co-workers. The Department needs you back at work, but more importantly, your friends and family need you in their lives. 4. This holiday season, please take every opportunity to celebrate safely and responsibly. For those of you unable to be with family and friends due to operational commitments, please know you are in our thoughts. We salute your patriotism and devotion to our mission and wish you and your families a happy holiday season and a safe and prosperous New Year. 5. Released by the Honorable Thomas B. Modly, Acting Secretary of the Navy.// BT #0001 NNNN UNCLASSIFIED//
