To the finest Sailors, Marines, and Civilians in the world, this week we mark the close of Black History Month and the beginning of Womens History Month. These occasions are not just opportunities to reflect on the lessons and accomplishments of the past, but a chance to take stock of our present, and our future. 2. Diversity is the strength of the force. The diversity of experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives that inform the quality of our character and the superiority of our force is truly one of our critical centers of gravity. Diversity is our strength and it is on all of us to protect and build that strength. Each of us serves in the wake of courageous warriors like Master Chief Carl Brashear, the Montford Point Marines, and Admiral Michelle Howard. We remember the Sacred Twenty Nurses of 1908, and the Golden Thirteen Officers of World War II. They inspire our service and challenge our determination to expand opportunity and equality throughout our force. 3. While we celebrate the pioneers and barrier breakers throughout our history, we should also reflect upon the countless lost opportunities and injustices that these historic milestones represent. These barriers never should have existed in the first place. They were created through conscious decisions, many from the very office I now occupy. 4. It is my determination, in partnership with Admiral Michael M. Gilday and General David H. Berger, to ensure that todays Navy and Marine Corps Team truly builds, encourages, and supports the potential of all who wish to serve. We must recruit and retain the finest of all of our nation, and support them throughout their careers. We must make a conscious effort to develop the leadership skills of all of our people throughout the ranks, promoting equality in every aspect of our force, and we must keep the lines of communication open, responding and respecting the unique needs of all of our Sailors, Marines, and the families that serve at their sides. 5. To all who maintain the watch today, around the world and across the force, thank you for your service. I am honored to serve at your side. 6. Released by Thomas W. Harker, Acting Secretary of the Navy.// BT #0001 NNNN UNCLASSIFIED//
