Director, Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC), is calling for applications for the Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison Naval History Supplemental Scholarship for the academic year 2021-2022. The purpose of the scholarship is to promote the development of a broad understanding of naval history within the American national experience. Historical knowledge is an invaluable tool to place current issues in context and for leaders to make sound decisions. 2. The grant is named in honor of the late Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison, USNR, an eminent naval and maritime historian and winner of the Pulitzer Prize. 3. The scholarship provides a $5,000 cash award to one active duty commissioned officer of the U. S. Navy or U. S. Marine Corps with demonstrated leadership potential and high academic qualifications who is already pursuing graduate study in history, international relations, or a related field. The award is to help pay for expenses related to research, travel, and the purchase of books or other educational materials. Research that applies the lessons of naval history to provide insights for the analysis of Great Power Competition and related challenges facing the current Navy is preferred, but not required. 4. Any officer desiring to compete for the Morison Supplemental Scholarship to be awarded for study beginning in the fall 2021 (academic year 2021-2022) should submit a letter of application via his/her Commanding Officer by email to NHHC_Fellowships@navy.mil or by mail to: Senior Advisory Historian, ATTN: Morison Scholarship, 805 Kidder Breese St. SE, Washington, DC 20374 -5060. 5. Applications must be received no later than 30 June 2021. NOTE: Mail security procedures in the DC area delay delivery for 5-7 days beyond normal delivery times. Candidates are reminded to allow adequate delivery time of items sent by U.S. Mail or use a commercial delivery service. E-mail use is encouraged. 6. University currently attending or to which application has been made and the current status of that application; b. Copy of officer biography; c. Outline of the proposed education program, degree, and major; d. Copies of all college/university transcripts; e. Statement not to exceed 500 words concerning the relationship of the Morison Scholarship to the applicant's interests and the value to be derived by both the applicant and the Navy/Marine Corps; f. Commanding Officer's endorsement; and g. Completed pdf application form from NHHC website. 7. Applications will be screened by the professional staff of NHHC. Recommendations on those applicants considered best qualified will be submitted to Director, NHHC, who will make the final selection and an alternate by 31 July 2021. Selection of the finalists will be based on the following criteria: a. Relevance of the chosen area of study to U.S. naval history; b. Demonstrated professional performance; c. Academic ability; and d. Potential for professional growth. 8. Taxes: For the tax implications of the award, recipients should consult the Internal Revenue Service and their state revenue offices or their tax advisors.
