RMKS/1.  To the Sailors, Marines, and civilians in the Navy - Marine Corps 
team: 
I recently traveled through the Indo-Pacific, a vast and vital region that 
has benefitted from over 75 years of peace and stability, thanks to the 
American veteran. 
The freedoms we enjoy, and the moments we share with our families and loved 
ones, were all earned for us, by those who served before.  From the beaches 
of Normandy, to the Mekong Delta, to the streets of Falluja and the mountains 
of Helmand, our veterans have led the way in battle.  Beyond the battlefield, 
they also preserved the peace, supporting the advance of democracy and 
prosperity, and forging the enduring partnerships that protect our world 
today. 
In civilian life, our veterans have continued to serve.  Every community in 
the United States benefits from veterans working in our schools and the 
hospitals, police stations and firehouses, small businesses, industries, 
newspapers and the halls of government. 
Many of those who continue to serve our mission today, in uniform, as 
civilians or industrial partners, are veterans.  To every veteran in the 
Department of the Navy, and all of the families who have served at their 
side, my wife Betty and I want to extend a special word of thanks.  You are 
the strength of our nation, and the enduring example for every future 
generation.
