RMKS/1.  The Department of the Navy (DON) joins the Nation in celebrating 
National American Indian Heritage Month and the many contributions that 
Native Americans and Alaskan Natives have made to the Navy and Marine 
Corps.  This years theme, Grounded in Tradition, Resilient in Spirit, 
reflects on the rich culture and heritage of Native American communities and 
their strength to endure through the toughest of times, particularly as our 
Nation has withstood the difficulty of the past year. 
 
2.  Native Americans have served proudly and distinguished themselves in 
service to our country.  In World War II, they served as code talkers, 
encrypting thousands of secret tactical transmissions that prevented Japanese 
forces from intercepting critical information.  Their contributions were 
hailed as instrumental in the success of nearly every Pacific Campaign and 
Allied success in the Pacific Theater. 
 
3.  Today, more than 15,000 active duty, reserve, and civilian members of the 
DON total force declare themselves as Native American or Alaskan Native.  To 
honor their service, and all who have served our country, we must ensure 
there is equal employment opportunity and workplace inclusivity across the 
DON.  We must ensure equal access to professional development programs and 
career enhancing opportunities.  We must build strong support networks and 
mentorship programs. 
 
4.  As we consider this years theme, let us celebrate the past 
accomplishments and current service of Native Americans and Alaskan Natives, 
but also make time to engage and learn about the cultural traditions, 
background, and experiences of our colleagues.  Let us remember how inclusion 
of many experiences, talents, and viewpoints are essential to mission and 
operational readiness. 
 
5.  Working together, we can create an inclusive and productive workforce of 
individuals engaged in serving our Nation and securing its future.
