Each October, the Department of the Navy (DON) observes National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) to celebrate the contributions of individuals with disabilities within our workforce. This year's theme, "Disability: Part of the Equity Equation," recognizes disability status as a significant aspect of diversity. 2. The DON strives to maintain a workplace that supports diversity, where accessibility plays a major role in achieving a more equitable and inclusive culture. Accessibility is defined as the design, construction, development, and maintenance of facilities, information and communication technology, programs, and services so that all people, including individuals with disabilities, can fully and independently use them. The DON has engaged in a number of affirmative strategies to support accessibility within the workplace, and has a team that tests and approves the most recent versions of assistive technologies for the Navy/Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI) network. The DON also has a dedicated executive-level Council for Individuals with Disabilities, which is committed to taking additional steps toward enhancing accessibility of information technology and facilities. 3. The DON's vision for the future incorporates best practices such as universal design to allow all people, including people with disabilities, to independently access or utilize physical and electronic spaces to their full capacity. Since the disability status of individuals can change at any time, a workplace designed to accommodate a wide range of abilities, disabilities and other factors, will ensure the continued mission readiness of our organization.
