To increase awareness of potential risks related to off-duty recreational activities during the summer months, the Department of the Navy (DON) has designated the period from Memorial Day through Labor Day as the 101 Critical Days of Summer. The increase in outdoor activities, driving, and travel brings increased risk to our personnel and families. Therefore, we must encourage and adopt an active risk management mindset to ensure this summer is a safe and happy one. You are one of the Nation's most precious resources. We cannot afford to lose you. During last year's 101 Critical Days of Summer, the DON tragically lost 29 Sailors and Marines to preventable accidents. Motor vehicle and motorcycle mishaps were the leading cause of fatal accidents during this period. Unfortunately, these statistics reflect trends across the United States. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration noted that traffic fatalities in 2022 were at a 20-year high nationwide. It is imperative that we drive defensively and use caution consistently. Each and every one of us must self-assess and self-correct. An active risk management mindset - whether on duty or liberty - is vital to maintaining the DON's mission effectiveness and operational readiness. Naval Safety Command (NAVSAFECOM) will spearhead the 101 Critical Days of Summer safety campaign, providing relevant and timely information to educate the naval enterprise and help mitigate risks associated with the most common off-duty mishaps. This safety campaign aims to provide resources, empower our Sailors and Marines to make good decisions, encourage us to look out for each other, and help us avoid needless loss of life or injury. I encourage all Sailors and Marines to learn more and take advantage of the resources available via the NAVSAFECOM website at https://navalsafetycommand.navy.mil. 2.
