This policy does not apply to Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIFs). This NAVADMIN supersedes reference (a) and establishes policy for the acceptable use of Wireless Local-Area Networks (WLANs) in spaces where collateral classified information is processed. 2. Navy commands are authorized to operate WLANs in spaces where collateral classified information systems operate when: a. The command has fully complied with references (b) and (c), with special attention to reference (b) paragraph 1.1.a.(2) and its glossary. b. WLAN has a valid authorization to operate (ATO). 3. User responsibilities in collateral classified spaces where WLANs are authorized: a. Maintain at least 1 meter separation between unclassified wireless transmitters and equipment processing classified information, per reference (b) paragraph 3.6. b. Users are responsible for ensuring compliance with reference (d) while using government issues devices. c. Non-government issued devices with embedded wireless transmitters (e.g., personal hot spots, laptops, tablets, Wi-Fi, etc.) and all cell phones remain prohibited in Navy collateral classified spaces. 4. If full compliance with references (b) and (c) is not possible, users are directed to disable embedded wireless transmitters in collateral classified spaces. a. User responsibilities in collateral classified spaces where WLANs are NOT authorized: (1)Users are responsible for ensuring government issued devices with embedded wireless transmitters are turned off prior to entering a Navy collateral classified space. (2) Users must physically connect government issued devices to the unclassified network (e.g., via network cable or docking station) BEFORE powering them on. (3) Users must power devices off BEFORE physically disconnecting them from the unclassified network. (4) Non-government issued devices with embedded wireless transmitters (e.g., personal hot spots, laptops, tablets, Wi-Fi, etc.) and all cell phones remain prohibited in Navy collateral classified spaces. 5. Command responsibilities: a. Commands will include instructions on properly handling devices with embedded wireless technology as part of command briefs, and annual cybersecurity training. b. Commands must document the requirements in paragraphs 3.a.1-3 in the certification and accreditation baseline for government issued devices, identified by make and model, to confirm that procedures are in place to prevent activation of the embedded wireless capability. c. Commands must ensure users with government issued devices with embedded wireless technology are aware of and acknowledge their responsibilities on an addendum to the System Authorization Access Request form, OPNAV 5239/14. 6.
