Continuation Boards
Selective Early Retirement Board (SERB)

Officer Continuation
Continuation is the selective process of retaining commissioned officers, serving in permanent grades above lieutenant junior grade (O-2), serving as permanent limited duty officers (LDOs), or serving as chief warrant officers (CWOs), who are subject to involuntary discharge or retirement for years of service or failures of selection (FOS) for promotion.  The Secretary of the Navy approves an annual Officer Continuation Plan to establish fiscal year (FY) continuation policy by grade, competitive category, and/or military specialties to meet service requirements.  A NAVADMIN message communicating the continuation policy for the next FY is released annually, normally in December, and can be amended by subsequent NAVADMIN messages.

U.S. Code, Title 10, Sections 580, 637, 637a, 1305, and 8372 and Secretary of the Navy Instructions. SECNAVINST 1920.7C and SECNAVINST 1412.8C are the governing directives for officer continuations.
