Rear Adm. Michael Schwerin is a native of Waukesha, Wisconsin. He is a 1988 graduate of Carroll University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, a Master of Arts and Doctorate in Philosophy (Applied Psychology) from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and Joint Professional Military Education from the U.S. Air Force Command and Staff College. He was commissioned as a Medical Service Corps Research Psychologist and subsequently transferred to the Human Resources community.
He performed staff tours in various MPT&E units including Navy Casualty, Center for Naval Leadership, Chief of Naval Operations N1 Navy Total Force, Officer Training Command Newport, and Navy Recruiting Command.
His command tours include commander, Navy Installations Command Mobilization Detachment San Diego; Expeditionary Combat Readiness Center Mobilization Detachment San Diego; and Navy Reserve Officer Training Command Newport.
Mobilizations include assignments as assistant officer in charge, Navy Mobilization Processing Site San Diego; and director of Manpower and Personnel (CJ-1), Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa during Operations Aqea Al Qaeda East Africa Exord, Oaken Coal and Southern Response.
Personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal, and various campaign, unit, and service medals.
In civilian capacity, he is a senior behavioral scientist conducting research in talent management, employee, and organizational behavior among military personnel. He authored 22 peer-reviewed research publications, served as an associate editor for Military Psychology from 2004-2018, was elected as Fellow of the American Psychological Association in 2017, and earned Senior Professional in Human Resources and Project Management Professional certifications.
