Job Description

Cyber Warfare Technician (CWT). CWTs employ tactical and strategic capabilities to plan, develop, and execute offensive and defensive Cyberspace Operations; perform Threat Analysis, Digital Forensics, Network Exploitation, Research and Development, and Mission Planning; leverage tactical and strategic signals intelligence and cryptologic functions; produce and execute cyberspace effects; identify and report worldwide threats in support of Special Operations Forces (SOF), national, Fleet, and joint requirements; and control and safeguard access to classified material and information systems.

 

Assignments & Duties

CWTs are deployed across a wide range of operational environments—from the Cyber Mission Force (CMF), Intelligence Community (IC), Special Operation Forces (SOF), and Navy assignments—serving in various roles ashore and at sea, either independently or as part of a larger team.

Special Pays & Incentives

Personnel in the CWT community are eligible for varying special pays and incentives based on the individuals work role, proficiency level, and billet assigned. More information can be found below at the following links.

NECs and Career Administration

CWT Proficiency NECs are live. Submit 1221/6 (NEC Change Request) to the NEC Helpdesk via MNCC's e-mail distribution (ASKMNCC@us.navy.mil)

When submitting, itemize the below in section 11 (amplifying remarks):

  • Timeline of completion (to include dates):
    • Previous proficiency qualification date
    • Required pre-requisite courses
    • JQRs
These requirements are to validate continuity (BUPERS and NAVIFOR validate all NEC requests).
Additionally, make sure the appropriate awarding authority signs the request (Commanding Officer, OIC).  If authority is delegated, include delegation memorandum as an attachment to MNCC or the request will be disapproved.

 

Eligibility Information

  • Must be a U.S. citizen
 
  • Notes: Applicants must be U.S. citizens with a high school diploma or equivalent, and must pass a Fleet Cyber Command security interview; Immediate family must also be citizens of the U.S. or an ICO 704 low-risk country, while former Peace Corps member or individuals with more turpitude offenses are ineligible.  
 
  • There are three ASVAB avenues to qualify for CWT
    • GS+AR+2MK>=239 -OR-
    • AR+MK+MC+VE>=239 -OR-
    • MK+CT+VE>=176 -and- CT>=60
    • Note: Cyber Test (CT) requirement is for new accession Sailors entering service after 30 Sep 2016

  • Navy Information Warfare Advanced Weapons School (NIWAWS) Warfare Tactics Instructor (WTI) 

the Navy Information Warfare (IW) Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI) program centers on maximizing combat effectiveness through support to fleet exercises, fleet experimentation, codification of tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTP), and adhering to a strict professional ethos.  The schoolhouse runs 2 courses a year for eligible E7 and above candidates.   • Secretary of the Navy Tours With Industry (SNTWI)

The Secretary of the Navy Tours with Industry (SNTWI) program focus on bridging the gap between military operations and private sector innovation by immersing exceptional Sailors in corporate environments to bring valuable best practices back to the fleet. This program is considered a non-degree fellowship that matches eligible personnel from E-6 to E-9 with partnering corporations based on tailored, mutually beneficial learning objectives.   • Naval Postgraduate School Masters in Applied Cyber Operations 

the Master of Science in Applied Cyber Operations (MACO) program focus on equipping the Navy's technical enlisted workforce—specifically Cyber Warfare Technicians (CWT) —with rigorous, master's degree-level expertise in full-spectrum cyberspace operations. The goal is to produce highly skilled cyber operators capable of conducting advanced network attack, defense, exploitation, and cyber fires, ensuring that cutting-edge research is rapidly integrated directly to the front-line warfighter from paygrades E6 to E9.
