General Description  

Logistics Specialists are responsible for providing exceptional customer service, operating financial accounting systems, managing inventories of repair parts and general supplies that support ships, squadrons and shore-based activities to include the Military Postal System.   They serve aboard Naval Surface Ships, Aviation Squadrons, Fleet Logistics Center (FLC), Naval Air Stations, Aviation Support Divisions (ASD), Staff billets, Presidential Support, Military Postal Systems, Construction battalions and Naval Special Warfare.  LSs procure, receive, store, and issue material and repair components and utilize financial accounting programs and databases.  TAR Logistic Specialist also serve in Military Post Offices.

What They Do

The duties performed by Logistics Specialists include:

* Providing exceptional customer service in a fast paced environment.

* Identifying, ordering, stocking and issuing repair parts, clothing and general supplies utilizing the Navy Supply System.  They are responsible for proper follow up and receipt procedures, warehouse layout and storage, and the proper operation of the Government Purchase Card Program utilizing open market purchasing.

* Perform duties associated with hazardous material control and management.

* Maintaining inventory databases for material stocked in shore based warehouses and shipboard storerooms.

* Maintaining financial records and accounting systems via Relational Supply (R-Supply) and Naval Aviation Logistics Command Management Information System (NALCOMIS) systems. 

* Organizing and maintaining property accounting databases, correspondence files and reports.

* Maintaining logistics, financial publications and CD-ROM libraries.

* Managing and operating Military Postal System (afloat and ashore), preparing and maintaining postal records and reports, processing, dispatching, routing and transportation of mail.

Working Environment 

Logistics Specialists work in shipboard storerooms, shore based warehouses, mail distribution centers, and air cargo terminals.  Logistics Specialists can serve aboard Naval Surface Ships, Submarines, Aviation Squadrons, Fleet Logistics Center (FLC), Naval Air Stations, Aviation Support Divisions (ASD), Staff billets, Presidential Support, Military Postal Systems, Construction battalions and Naval Special Warfare.  Flexibility and a positive attitude are essential because the work is physical, mentally demanding and challenging.  Opportunities are also available in Special Programs for Sailors to work as Recruiters, Recruit Division Commanders (RDC), Substance Abuse Counselors, Detailers, Enlisted Community Managers and Independent Duty Logistics Specialists.

After "A" School, Logistics Specialists are assigned to deploying units or shore stations in the United States and/or overseas.  During a 20-year career in the Navy, LS's spend approximately 55 percent of their time assigned to fleet units and 45 percent to shore stations.

Career Path Opportunities

Opportunities for placement are excellent for qualified personnel.  Individual motivation, ability, and work ethic will determine how far a Logistics Specialist can advance in the enlisted or officer ranks during a 20-to-30 year career.  A Logistics Specialist who has achieved the rank of E-6 may be eligible to apply for commissioning as a Limited Duty Officer (LDO).  Along with the LDO program, there are several other programs (STA-21, OCS, MECP, MSC-IPP, and the Naval Academy) that allow a Logistics Specialist to earn a path to a commission.  There is no longer a Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) program available for the Logistics field.

In the Navy Business Field, a Logistics Specialist will find a diversified and challenging field of work with unmatched potential for personal growth and professional development.  Sailors will have the opportunity to develop problem solving, critical thinking, leadership, and organizational skills.  Sailors in this rating will develop practical knowledge and experience unmatched in the civilian world.  All of the training and experience received can directly transfer to all areas within today's business and human resource fields in the event that a Logistics Specialist should decide to separate from Naval service.

Apprenticeship Program

The United States Military Apprenticeship Program (USMAP) is a formal military training program executed by the Center for Personal and Professional Development that provides active duty Coast Guard, Marine Corps and U.S. Navy service members the opportunity to improve their job skills and to complete their civilian apprenticeship requirements while they are on active duty.  The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) provides the nationally recognized "Certificate of Completion" upon program completion.

USMAP enhances your job skills and shows your motivation for more challenging military assignments.  Having a DOL Certificate of Completion is a definite advantage in marketing better civilian jobs since employers know the value of apprenticeships.
