BECOMING AN AVIATOR, NAVAL FLIGHT OFFICER, OR AERIAL VEHICLE OPERATOR

The Aviation Officer community takes prospective flight students primarily from: United States Naval Academy (USNA), Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) units, Officer Candidate School (OCS) and various other accession sources.  All aspiring Aviation Officers commence initial flight training at Naval Air Station Pensacola, FL.  For details on flight training please go to the Chief of Naval Air and Training web site.  For information about submitting an Aviation Age Waiver Request for OCS, please contact Commander, Navy Recruiting Command (CNRC) at (901)874-7628.

LATERAL TRANSFER OPPORTUNITY

Entry into the Aviation community for those officers already serving in the Navy is via the Lateral Transfer board.  Further guidance follows and please see general details at the Active Duty Transfer and Redesignation site
   - Source Communities: Officers will be considered from any URL, IWL, Special Duty, or Staff designator. YG 24 seeking lateral transfer into the Aviation Warfare community are strongly encouraged to contact the AVN Community Manager prior to applying. Officers that have more than 3 years and 1 month of commissioned service are not eligible to apply.

Degree/Requirements. No specific degree requirements. Must read MILPERSMAN 1542-010 in its entirety. All candidates must have a Naval Operational Medicine Institute (NOMI) official score letter showing an Aviation Selection Test Battery (ASTB) score of 4 or better in Academic Qualifications Rating (AQR) and 5 or better in Pilot/NFO Flight Aptitude Rating (FAR). Candidates must not have passed their 32nd birthday. Officers must complete an Aviation Candidate Physical and receive an approval letter from NAMI stating which program (Pilot, NFO, or both) the applicant is physically qualified to enter. Officers must not have been previously separated from any flight training program in the Army, Navy, or Air Force. Contact with Aviation OCM is strongly encouraged to ensure eligibility.

​​​​​​​Clearance Requirements. Candidates must meet the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), Intelligence Community Directive (ICD) 704 eligibility standards for access to TS/SCI. Applicants should include a letter from a Special Security Officer indicating successful completion of an SCI pre-screening interview.​​​​​​​
