Montgomery GI Bill Death Benefit

 
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) computes and pays a death benefit to eligible beneficiaries of active duty servicemembers or veterans who have unused benefits and participated in the Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) program.  The death must have occurred on active duty or within one year of separation as a result of a service-connected cause.  The Military Pay/Contributions Benefit maximum amount payable is the amount of MGIB benefits the individual was due based on their training, but had not received at the time of death.  The benefit is paid to the designated Servicemembers’/Veterans Group Life Insurance (SGLI/VGLI) beneficiaries.  If there is no SGLI/VGLI beneficiary designated, the benefit will be paid to the surviving spouse, minor child or children, in each shares or the parent or parents in equal shares.  Accrued Benefits do not involve beneficiaries and are paid to the first person as previously stated.

The assigned Casualty Assistance Calls Officer will assist the beneficiaries in obtaining this benefit.
