Active Duty for Operational Support (ADOS)

PERS-462 manages the Active Duty for Operational Support (ADOS) program.  All requests for ADOS are submitted to PERS-462 in accordance with OPNAVINST 1001.20 series – the governing directive for ADOS - and the guidance located on this webpage.

The ADOS program supports Navy mission requirements for which no permanent duty billet exists and where Active Duty personnel with the required skills are not reasonably available.

A request for an ADOS requirement is submitted by a command that requires temporary reserve support to facilitate valid, unfunded, unplanned, emergent, non-recurring projects that assigned personnel cannot accomplish.  This type of ADOS is not intended to fill gapped billets.  ADOS orders are issued for a duration of 30 days or more in length and do not exceed 365 days (including the period required for processing onto active duty and release from active duty).  Orders do not normally cross fiscal year boundaries.

The PERS-462 webpage contains the following information:

  • Guidance for Gaining Commands on the process for submission of the ADOS request

  • Guidance for Reservists interested in applying for ADOS

  • Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

*As with any process, keep your Chain of Command informed, including your Unit and NRA leadership.  Contact your Reserve Program Director (RPD) for ADOS process assistance.
