SPECIAL UNIFORM SITUATIONS
6701 - Maternity Uniforms

6701.  GENERAL (MATERNITY UNIFORMS)

1.  WEAR.  Certified maternity uniforms are mandatory for all pregnant women in the Navy when a uniform is prescribed, and regular uniforms no longer fit.  Personnel are expected to wear regular uniforms upon return from convalescent leave, however, commanding officers may approve the wear of maternity uniforms up to six months from the date of delivery based on medical officer diagnosis/recommendation.

2.  OUTERGARMENTS

a.  Pregnant Sailors may wear authorized uniform outer garments unbuttoned or unzipped when a proper fastened fit is no longer possible or becomes uncomfortable.  Authorized uniform outer garments include the cold weather parka, all-weather coat, overcoat, peacoat, reefer, cardigan sweater, black relax jacket, NWU parka and black fleece liner.

b.  A maternity cardigan sweater is also an authorized outer garment for optional wear.  When worn with a dress shirt and necktab, the shirt collar is worn inside the sweater.  When worn with an open collar shirt, the shirt collar will be outside the sweater.  The addition of epaulets on the current maternity sweater has been approved.  Officers/CPOs are required to wear soft shoulder boards and E6 and below wear no insignia.  E6 and below may continue to wear the maternity cardigan sweater without epaulets as long as serviceable.
