PS CAREER PATH
General Description Personnel Specialist (PS) provide enlisted personnel with information and counseling related to Navy occupations, opportunities for general education and job training, requirements for promotion, and rights and benefits. PS maintain and audit pay and personnel records of military personnel, determine military pay and travel entitlements and deductions. They prepare the financial/accounting reports related to individual pay and travel transactions and operate associated accounting systems. They also assist enlisted people and their families with special problems or personal hardships. What They Do The duties performed by PSs include:
Maintaining and entering data into Enlisted Service Records
Gaining personnel to new commands, transferring personnel, preparing personnel for retirement/Fleet Reserve. Preparing all types of separations.
I.D. Card issuance
Providing enlisted people with information and counseling related to Navy occupations, opportunities for general education and job training, requirements for promotion, and rights and benefits
Assisting enlisted people and their families with special problems or personal hardships
Perform counseling and interviewing personnel on a variety of matters
Administers advancement examinations, order advancement examinations and process examination returns
Making recommendations for assignments
Writing official letters and reports
Maintaining payroll and accounting databases for disbursement and collection of government funds
Performing travel claim accounting; preparing financial reports
Serves as agent cashiers to pay government funds
Acting as collection agents of money owed to U.S. Treasury by Navy personnel
Maintains and audits Automated Teller Machines onboard the ships
Provide pay and entitlement information to individual Navy members
Working Environment Work in the PS rating is usually performed in a clean office environment. Personnel in this rating may work alone with little supervision, or work closely with others under close supervision, depending on individual assignments. They do mostly administrative work. Requirements ASVAB: MK + VE = 103 or CS + MK + VE = 148 Notes Personnel entering into the PS rating must not have been convicted or received punishment for any crime incident to larceny or fraud by a court-martial under the UCMJ, Article 15 or by a civilian court within the previous 36 months.
