Enlisted Retirements/Fleet Reserve - PERS 836


 

Responsibilities

-  Administers the policies, instructions, and procedures for voluntary enlisted retirement and transfer to the Fleet Reserve, including cancellations, modifications, and deferments. 
 

Definitions

Fleet Reserve - An enlisted member of the naval service who has completed a minimum of 20 years of active service in the armed forces may, at his/her request, be transferred to the Fleet Reserve. (10 USC 8330)

Enlisted Retirement - An enlisted member of the regular Navy who has completed 30 or more years of active service in the armed forces may be retired by the President.  (10 USC 8326)  (Note: Members of the U.S. Naval Reserve who request retirement after 30 years of active service must submit a request to transfer to the Fleet Reserve at the end of the month.  They will be transferred to the retired list on the first day of the following month.)

 

Retirement/Fleet Reserve Submission Process

Members are directed to create and route all regular retirement or Fleet Reserve transfer requests to Navy Personnel Command using the Navy Standard Integrated Personnel System (NSIPS) through the Retirements and Separations self-service function.

Note: Commands without NSIPS capability must contact PERS-836 for guidance and assistance in submitting requests.

Submit requests within the following timelines:
    E6 and below:  6-18 months prior to requested date
    E7 and above:  6-24 months prior to requested date
