The following are the major ongoing and/or annual surveys that are developed and/or conducted through the Navy Survey Office. Many ad-hoc surveys are also reviewed and approved by the Survey Office each year. Before new surveys are conducted, personnel should reach out to the Survey Office to see whether data already exists for their intended purpose.

Survey Title Survey Description
Health of the Force  The Health of the Force survey is a strategic level engagement survey conducted annually by the Navy Survey Office on behalf of the Chief of Navy Personnel. The results of the survey provide Navy leaders with insights into the experiences of Navy personnel across the fleet and also support community level breakouts. A core set of metrics are captured annually in the survey providing insight into how things are changing from year to year. The remainder of the survey alternates focus between Sailors’ personal lives (even years) and experiences in the workplace (odd years). When possible, the survey also incorporates topics of emergent interest to Navy leadership to minimize the need for additional surveys.
Navy Retention Surveys The Navy conducts two retention surveys, a Milestone Survey and an Exit Survey, to gauge Sailor interest in staying in the Navy and factors that impact decisions to separate. The milestone survey is distributed to a random sample of Sailors approximately 1.5 years before dates like the end of a Minimum Service Requirement or End of Obligated Service. The exit survey is distributed once triggers in HR databases show a Sailor has intentions to separate.
DEOCS The Defense Organizational Climate Survey is an organization development survey that measures cross-cutting risk and protective factors to help DoD leadership and unit/organization leaders gain an understanding of problematic behaviors in their organization. The DEOCS program is managed and administered by the Office of People Analytics (OPA), a DoD component under the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness and the Defense Human Resources Activity. Recent changes to the Command Climate Assessment can be found here.
