5201.  BREAST INSIGNIA
 

1.  Command Insignia
 

a.  Authorized Insignia
 
b.  Provisions for Wear.  All eligible officers may wear the Command-at-Sea and Command Ashore/Project Manager insignia in the incumbent position as applicable.  Only one incumbent command insignia may be worn.  The miniature Command insignia is worn with all uniforms except Full Dress uniforms.

c.  Manner of Wearing Command Insignia
(1) Incumbent
 
(a) Wear Command Insignia on the right breast, centered 1/4 inch above the pocket.  On uniforms without a right breast pocket, place it in the same rela­tive position as the ribbons/medals.  When wearing a name­tag, center the device 1/4 inch above the nametag.  On Dinner Dress and Formal uniforms, men wear it on the right lapel, 3 inches below the notch and women wear it on the right lapel, down one-third the distance between the shoulder seam and coat hem. 
 
(b) When wearing Full Dress uniforms, center Command Insignia 1/4 inch above the ribbons.

(c) May be worn with the other post-tour Command Insignia, i.e. incumbent Command Ashore with post-tour Command-at-Sea and vice versa.

(2) Post Tour
 
(a) Optional simultaneous wear of Post-Tour Command at Sea and Command Ashore/Project Manager insignia is authorized when wearing Working Uniforms (NWUs, Navy Coveralls and Flight Suits), Service Uniforms and Service Dress uniforms.  When worn simultaneously, the Command at Sea insignia will be placed inboard toward the center of the chest denoting primary placement.  The Command Ashore/Project Manager insignia will be worn adjacent and to the wearer’s left of the Command at Sea Insignia, with one inch between the facing outer edges of both insignias.  If you are also an incumbent, the post-tour Command Insignia of the same command category will not be worn.
 
(b) Center the insignia (one or both post tour insignias) on the left breast, 1/4 inch below the top of the pocket/flap.  When wearing two qualification breast insignia (primary above the Service Tape and secondary below the Service Tape), center the Command Insignia 1/4 inch below the secondary insignia, or on uniforms with pocket flaps, 1/4 inch below the flap.  When wearing Command Insignia and an identification badge, men center the badge 1/4 inch below the command Insignia, and women center the badge 1/4 inch above the left pocket, ribbons or primary insignia.

(c) When worn with Dinner Dress uniforms, only one post tour command insignia may be worn.  Center Command Insignia 1/4 inch below the miniature medals or secondary breast insignia.

(d) When wearing Full Dress uniforms, only one post tour insignia may be worn.  Men center Command Insignia 1/4 inch below the lower of either the medals or a second insignia; women center the insignia 1/4 inch above the left pocket, medals or primary breast insignia.  On Full Dress White, the combination of breast insignia, medals and identification badge, will not extend below the lower seam of the pocket.
 
  
a.  Authorized Insignia.  The listing below constitutes those breast insignia, alphabetically by category, authorized for wear on the naval uniform.  Breast or qualification insignia of other services will not be worn.  Breast or qualification insignia of other nations will not be worn on the naval uniforms unless specifically authorized by the Secretary of the Navy.

b.  Provisions for Wear
 
(1) Metal Insignia.  Wear metal pin-on breast insignia on the following uniforms.  When two sizes of insignia exist, the miniature size insignia is normally worn on uniforms requiring miniature medals. Exception:  Miniature Small Craft insignia is worn on all uniforms except full dress uniforms.

(2) One or two earned warfare devices or breast insignia may be worn on the following working uni­forms in the same relative positions as described below.  Insignia may be pin-on or embroidered.  The background material for embroidered devices will match the uniform on which it is worn.

(3) One or two earned warfare devices or breast insignia embroidered on tape strips may be worn on the following working uniforms as described below and IAW article 5201.2c(1)(b) and (d).  Tape strips fabric, color and length will be IAW article 3101.5b.

(4) Pin-on devices will not be worn on working uniforms when metal devices might present a FOD or safety hazard.

(5) Breast insignia.  Pin on anodized (shiny) or oxidized (pewter in appearance) silver breast insignia may be worn in the manner prescribed below:
 
(a) Silver breast insignias will have either an anodized or oxidized finish.  Personnel qualified to wear multiple breast insignias are authorized to wear devices of the same finish (anodized or oxidize).  Wearing breast insignias of different finishes (i.e., anodized and oxidized) is prohibited.
 
(b) Hand polishing of breast insignias is authorized but not to the degree of altering the general appearance, finish or detail of the device.  
 
c.  Manner of Wearing Warfare and Other Qualification Insignia
 
(1) Breast insignia are worn on the left side of the uniform in a primary position, or a primary and secondary position.  (Figure 5-1-1). 

(a) Primary position with ribbons or medals.  The insignia is centered above ribbons or medals with the lower edge of the device 1/4 inch above the top row of ribbons or medals.

(b) Primary position without ribbons or medals.  The insignia is centered above the left pocket with the lower edge of the device 1/4 inch above the top of the pocket.  For NWU Type III and Navy Coveralls the insignia is centered above and flush with the "U.S. NAVY" service tape on the shirt article 3101.6.  For Dinner Dress Jackets, men center the insignia on the left lapel, 3 inches below the notch; women center the insignia on the left lapel down one-third the distance between the shoulder seam and coat hem.

(c) Secondary position with ribbons or medals.  The insignia is centered below ribbons with the top of the device 1/4 inch below the top of the pocket or pocket flap, or centered below medals with the top of the device 1/4 inch below the lowest row of medals.

(d) Secondary position without ribbons or medals.  The insignia is centered 1/4 inch below the top of the pocket or pocket flap. For NWU Type III and Navy Coveralls the insignia is centered below and flush with the "U.S. NAVY" service tape on the shirt.  For Dinner Dress Jackets, center the insignia on the left lapel, 1/4 inch below medals with the primary insignia.
 
(2) If wearing only one device, place it in the primary position.

(3) Personnel with multiple qualifications may wear two insignia, placing one in the primary position and the second in the secondary position, within the following guideline:    
      
(a) Warfare qualification insignia take precedence over other qualification insignia and are placed in the primary position.

(b) Two warfare insignia are authorized following these rules:
 
(1)  The warfare insignia of the specialty in which currently serving will be worn in the primary position.

(2)  For NWU Type III the secondary breast insignia may be worn below, flush and centered under primary warfare insignia and flush with the top of the service tape (double stacked).

(3)  If not currently serving in a warfare specialty, or have not earned the warfare insignia of the specialty in which currently serving:  officers will wear the insignia corresponding to their designator, otherwise the warfare insignia earned first in the primary position; all other personnel will wear the warfare insignia earned first in the primary position.

(4) If no longer designated as a warfare specialist, continue wearing the earned warfare insignia, following the guidelines of this chapter, unless prohibited from doing so by administrative action.

(5) When insignia has both gold and silver versions, enlisted personnel wear silver, officers wear gold, within the following rules:
 
(a) Enlisted personnel who qualify for insignia, and are subsequently advanced to officer status continue wearing the enlisted insignia until qualified for a corresponding officer insignia; then replace the enlisted insignia with the officer insignia.

(b) Enlisted personnel who have been awarded the Small Craft insignia and are subsequently advanced to officer status wear the gold Small Craft Insignia.

(c) Enlisted personnel, who qualified in a warfare specialty as officers and were subsequently reverted to enlisted status, may continue to wear the officer insignia.
 
(6) Enlisted personnel awarded the Craftmaster insignia and subsequently advanced to officer status may continue to wear the Craftmaster Insignia.
 
a.  Command Insignia

Command at Sea
(1) Command at Sea.  A gold metal or embroidered fabric insignia consisting of a five-pointed pyramidal star on anchor flukes and a partially unfurled commission pennant showing six stars.
   
Command Ashore/Project Manager
 
(2) Command Ashore/Project Manager.  A gold or embroidered fabric insignia with three pronged trident centered on an elliptically shaped laurel wreath.
 
   
b.  Aviation Insignia
Description
   
Naval Astronaut
(1) Naval Astronaut.  A gold metal or embroidered fabric insignia with a star shoot­ing diagonally from the bottom right to the top left, through an elliptical ring, on the shield of tra­ditional Naval Aviator's wings.
   
Naval Astronaut (NFO)
(2) Naval Astronaut (NFO).  A gold metal or embroidered fabric insignia with a star shooting diagonally from bottom right to top left through an elliptical ring, on the shield of the traditional Naval Flight Officer's wings.
   
Naval Aviator (Pilot)
(3) Naval Aviator (Pilot).  A gold metal winged or embroidered fabric insignia with a fouled anchor behind a shield in the center.
   
Naval Aviation Observer and Flight Meteorologists
(4) Naval Aviation Observer and Flight Meteorologists.  A gold metal or embroidered fabric winged insignia with a silver 0 circum­scribing a plain silver anchor on a gold back­ground.
   
Naval Flight Surgeon
(5) Naval Flight Surgeon.  A gold metal or embroidered fabric winged insignia with a Medical Corps device in the center in­scribed in an oval.
   
Naval Flight Nurse
(6) Naval Flight Nurse.  A gold metal or embroidered fabric insignia matching the design of the flight surgeons insignia without the acorn.
   
Naval Flight Officer (NFO)
(7) Naval Flight Officer (NFO).  A gold metal or embroidered fabric winged insignia with a shield with a set of small, crossed, fouled anchors in the center.
   
Aviation Experimental Psychologist and Aviation Physiologist Insignia
 (8) Aviation Experimental Psychologist and Aviation Physiologist Insignia.  A gold metal or embroidered winged pin with a Medical Service Corps device in the center inscribed in an oval.
   
Professional Aviation Maintenance Officer
(9) Professional Aviation Maintenance Officer.  A gold metal or embroidered fabric winged insignia with a silver eagle perched over a silver shield, and a scroll at the bottom with the words “AERO MAINTENANCE.”
   
Medical Service Corps Flight Officer
(10) Medical Service Corps Flight Officer.  A gold metal or embroidered fabric winged insignia with a Medical Service Corps device in the center inscribed in an oval.
   
Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist (EAWS)
(11) Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist (EAWS).  A silver metal or embroidered fabric winged insignia with an anchor on a shield in the center and a scroll at the bottom of the shield.
   
Naval Aviation Supply Corps
(12) Naval Aviation Supply Corps.  A gold metal or embroidered fabric winged insignia with a supply corps oak leaf in the center.
 
Naval Aircrew (NAC) Warfare Specialist
(13) Naval Aircrew (NAC) Warfare Specialist.  A gold metal or embroidered fabric winged insignia with an anchor inscribed in a circle in the center.  The letters "AC" straddle the shank of the anchor.
   

Aerial Vehicle Pilot
(14)  Aerial Vehicle Pilot. A gold metal device 5/8 inch in height and 2 ¾ inches in width, consisting of a silver bordered, gold shield with a background of concentric circles emanating from the bottom throughout, displaying a silver delta pointing downwards, all upon a pair of diagonally crossed fouled anchors; all superimposed upon a pair of stylized wings displayed.
   
c. Engineering Duty Officer Insignia

Engineering Duty Officer (EDO)
(1) Engineering Duty Officer (EDO).  A gold metal or embroidered fabric insignia with two oak leaf branches facing a silver circle centered on a gold fouled anchor inscribed with a silver three bladed propeller, on gold background overlaid on crossed U.S. Navy officer swords, rendered in gold.  The tips of the propeller blades trisect the circle and the south facing blade is vertical.
   
d.  Expeditionary Warfare Insignia

Navy Expeditionary Supply Corps Officer (NESCO)
(1) Navy Expeditionary Supply Corps Officer (NESCO).  A gold metal or embroidered fabric insignia with a Supply Corps oak leaf centered, superimposed on a crossed sword and M16A1 rifle, on background of ocean swells.
   
Enlisted Expeditionary Warfare (EXW) Specialist
(2) Enlisted Expeditionary Warfare (EXW) Specialist.  A silver metal or embroidered fabric insignia showing the bow and superstructure of a patrol boat superimposed over a crossed M-16 rifle and enlisted cutlass, on a background of ocean swells.
   
e. Explosive Ordnance Disposal Warfare Insignia

(1) Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Officer. A gold plated metal or embroidered fabric insignia with a star centered in a laurel wreath mounted atop a shield containing a conventional bomb pointing down with a centered silver star, and radiant with four lightning flashes with mirror-like finish and polished highlights. 
   
Master Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Warfare
(2) Master Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Warfare. A silver plated metal or embroidered fabric insignia with a star centered in a laurel wreath mounted atop a shield containing a conventional bomb pointing down with a centered silver star, and radiant with four lightning flashes with mirror-like finish and polished highlights.

(1) Fleet Marine Force (FMF) Officer.  A gold, highly polished, metal or embroidered fabric insignia depicting the eagle, globe and anchor atop two crossed rifles on a background of ocean swells breaking on a sandy beach.  The eagle, continents and rifles are highlighted with a highly polished silver finish.
   
Fleet Marine Force (FMF) Officer (Chaplain)

(2) Fleet Marine Force (FMF) Officer (Chaplain).  A gold, highly polished, metal or embroidered fabric insignia depicting the eagle, globe and anchor on a background of ocean swells breaking on a sandy beach.

(1) Marine Corps Combat Aircrew (CAC).  A metal or embroidered fabric insignia.  The metal insignia has silver wings, with a gold-colored circular shield with superimposed fouled anchor; the word "AIRCREW" in raised letters on a silver-colored background below the circular shield; above the shield is a silver-colored scroll.  Gold stars, up to a total of three as merited, will be mounted on the silver scroll. A silver star may be worn in lieu of three gold stars.

(2) Master Special Warfare Combat Crewman (SWCC).  A 2 1/2 by 1 3/8 inch silver matte metal or embroidered fabric insignia showing a background of an anchor with a banner and three gold stars, cocked flintlock pistol, a crossed naval enlisted cutlass and a MK V Special Operations Craft atop a bow wave.
   
Senior Special Warfare Combat Crewman (SWCC)
(3) Senior Special Warfare Combat Crewman (SWCC). A 2 1/2 by 1 3/8 inch silver matte metal or embroidered fabric insignia showing a background of an anchor, cocked flintlock pistol, a crossed naval enlisted cutlass and a MK V Special Operations Craft atop a bow wave.

s. Submarine Patrol Insignia
Description
   
Submarine Combat Patrol
(1) Submarine Combat Patrol.  A silver metal or embroidered fabric insignia showing the broadside view of a "Flying Fish" class submarine proceeding on the surface, with a scroll at the bottom of the wave.  Gold stars are mounted on the scroll to indicate each successful patrol subsequent to that for which the original insignia was awarded.  Stars may also be placed on the wave area of the insignia.  Holes are bored for that purpose.  A silver star indicates five successful patrols.
   
SSBN Deterrent Patrol
(2) SSBN Deterrent Patrol.  A silver or gold metal or embroidered fabric insignia showing the broad­side view of a "LAFAYETTE" class SSBN proceeding sub­merged, with a POLARIS missile circled by three electron paths, centered in the foreground, and a scroll across the bottom of missile and submarine. Metal pins can be adorned with gold or silver stars, with silver given priority.  Stars are mounted on the scroll in the order shown on diagram at left to indicate each additional patrol, as follows:
(a) Silver pin alone, without stars, one patrol.

(1) Submarine Warfare (SS) Officer.  A gold metal or embroidered fabric insignia showing the bow view of a submarine proceeding on the surface with bow planes rigged for diving; flanked by dolphins in horizontal position, their heads resting on upper edge of bow planes.
   
Submarine Warfare (SS) Enlisted
(2) Submarine Warfare (SS) Enlisted.  A silver metal or embroidered fabric insignia showing bow view of a submarine proceeding on the surface with bow planes rigged for diving; flanked by dolphins in horizontal position, their heads resting on upper edge of bow planes.
   
Submarine Medical
(3) Submarine Medical.  A gold metal or embroidered fabric insignia with two dolphins facing an oval in the center in­scribed with the Medical Corps device.  The acorn in center is silver.
   
Submarine Engineering Duty
(4) Submarine Engineering Duty.  A gold metal or embroidered fabric insignia with two dolphins facing a silver circle center inscribed with a silver, three bladed, propeller on a gold background.  The tips of propeller blades trisect the circle and one blade is vertical.
   
Submarine Supply Corps
(5) Submarine Supply Corps.  A gold metal or embroidered fabric insignia with two dolphins facing a Supply Corps oak leaf in the center
   
     Deep Submergence (Officer)

(2) Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS).  A silver metal or embroidered fabric insignia showing the bow and super­structure of a modern naval warship on two crossed cutlasses, on a background of ocean swells.
   
Surface Warfare Dental Corps
(3) Surface Warfare Dental Corps.  A gold metal or embroidered fabric insignia with a spread oak leaf, a silver acorn on each side of the stem on two crossed swords, on a background of ocean swells.
   
Surface Warfare Medical Corps
(4) Surface Warfare Medical Corps.  A gold metal or embroidered fabric insignia with a spread oak leaf surcharged with a silver acorn on two crossed swords, on a background of ocean swells.
   
Surface Warfare Medical Service Corps
(5) Surface Warfare Medical Service Corps.  A gold metal or embroidered fabric insignia with a spread oak leaf, attached to a slanting twig on two crossed swords, on a background of ocean swells.
   
Surface Warfare Nurse Corps
(6) Surface Warfare Nurse Corps.  A gold metal or embroidered fabric insignia, with a spread oak leaf on two crossed swords, on a background of ocean swells.
   
Surface Supply Corps
(7) Surface Supply Corps.  A gold metal or embroidered fabric insignia with a supply corps oak leaf centered on the bow and superstructure of a modern naval warship superimposed on two crossed naval swords, on a background of ocean swells.
 
   
v. Underwater Insignia
Description
   
Diving Officer (DV)
(1) Diving Officer (DV). A gold metal or embroidered fabric insignia with two upright seahorses facing a diving helmet, and two tridents projecting upward and canted outward form the diving helmets cover.  A double carrick bend superimposed on the breast plate.
   
 Master Diver (MDV)
(2) Master Diver (MDV).  Same as Diving Officer Insignia, but silver.
   
 Diving Officer (Medical) (DV)
(3) Diving Officer (Medical) (DV).  Same as the Diving Officer Insignia with a caduceus on the breast plate.
   
Diving Medical Technician (DV)
(4) Diving Medical Technician (DV).  Same as Diving (medical) Insignia, but silver in color.
   
First Class Diver (DV)
(5) First Class Diver (DV).  A silver metal or embroidered fabric insignia consisting of a diving helmet surrounded by sea serpents.
   
  Second Class Diver (DV)
(6) Second Class Diver (DV).  A silver metal or embroidered fabric insignia consisting of a diving helmet and breastplate.
   
 Scuba Diver
(7) Scuba Diver.  A silver metal or embroidered fabric insignia consisting of a wet suit hood and face mask with breathing apparatus.
   
w.  Chaplain Qualification Insignia
Description
Surface Chaplain Officer Qualification Insignia
 (1)  Surface Chaplain Officer Qualification Insignia. A gold metal or embroidered device depicting the bow-on aspect of a warship on a background of ocean swells, beneath which is displayed a scroll banner with the Navy Chaplain Corps motto, “VOCATI AD SERVITIUM.”
 
          a. Nametags.  Center nametags 1/4 inch above the right breast pocket.  On uniforms without a right breast pocket, place nametags on the right front in a position corresponding to ribbons on the left.  Nametags are rectangular not exceeding dimen­sions of 1 inch by 3-1/2 inches, and may be of any color and design as long as the nametag is standard throughout the command. The use of name accents is authorized.

          b. Velcro Backed Leather Nametag.  Nametags will be made of plain black leather in 2" x 4" dimension.  Name, rank/rate and duty status (USN) will be embossed in gold for officers/CPOs and in silver for E1-E6 personnel with lettering in block letters, 1/4 inch high. The use of name accents is authorized.  Only one earned breast insig­nia may be worn.  (Patrol pins not authorized).  The insig­nia (silver or gold) will be embossed above the individual's name.

          c. Unit Specific Embroidered Fabric Nametag.  Fabric nametags will be 2 inches by 4 inches in dimension with gold block lettering 1/4 inch high, embroidered on cloth, reflecting unit design and colors.  Outer borders/edges may be embroidered or embossed in gold color.  The use of name accents is authorized.  Fabric nametags will also include first name, middle initial, and last name, first name and last name, or initials and last name and duty status (USN).  Billet title (CO, XO, CHENG, OPS, etc.) and rank/grade are optional.  Centered in the top field will be the primary gold warfare breast insignia.
