Brig Duty (NEC-826A/810A)
Opportunities exist worldwide in locations of fleet concentration areas, training facilities and certain overseas location such as Hawaii, Germany and Yokosuka, Japan. To view other areas, log on to My Navy Assignment (MNA) and scroll to 826A in the rating pull-down menu. Brig Duty instruction is MILPERSMAN 1306-904 and is a Shore Special Program. Brig Staff duty offers unique challenges and provides members an opportunity to further develop their leadership skills. Those selected will receive four weeks of training at Naval Corrections Academy, Chesapeake, VA. Applications must be submitted via My Navy Assignment (for requisition list, select NEC 826A). Before applying you must contact your rating detailer to be released to Shore Special Programs. The screening process will include a Shore Special Programs Screening, MILPERSMAN 1306-900. The screening will need to be complete before receiving hard copy orders.
Additionally, there are billets throughout the community that have a requirement for NEC 810A (Counselor Course). The prerequisite for the counselor course is the Corrections Course (826A). Both courses are taught at the same school. Generally, a sailor will attend the Corrections Course and then stay to complete the Counselor Course directly after if the billet they are headed to holds a requirement for 810A.
Transient Personnel Units – TPU
Billets are obtained by applying in My Navy Assignment (MNA) under your specific rating. You may also call me to see if there are any general openings. TPU offers unique challenges and provides members an opportunity to further develop their leadership skills. The screening process will include a Shore Special Programs Screening, MILPERSMAN 1306-904. The screening will need to be complete before receiving hard copy orders.
Working hours at most TPU Commands mainly consist of shift work (meaning 0800-1600 is not the norm). If you're considering TPU for your next shore duty assignment, it is highly recommended that you make contact with the TPU that you are interested in BEFORE applying for orders in MNA. Inquire into the job description and specific working hours. Should you take or provided you accept the orders for a TPU assignment, you will be required to work the shifts assigned. Billets are obtained through My Navy Assignment (MNA) applications under NEC 807A. Billets are in San Diego, CA and Kittery, ME. Before applying you must contact your rating detailer to be released to Shore Special Programs. The screening process will include a Shore Special Programs Screening, MILPERSMAN 1306-900, high risk instructor duty screening, a psych eval and an interview. NEC 805A is a prerequisite to become a SERE instructor. All screenings will need to be complete before receiving hard copy orders. Review article MILPERSMAN 1306-955 for job application requirements.

The Safe Harbor is the Navy's sole organization for coordinating the non-medical care of seriously wounded, ill, and injured Sailors and Coast Guardsmen, while providing resources and support to their families. Through proactive leadership, the program provides individually-tailored assistance designed to optimize the success of the wounded warrior's recovery, rehabilitation, and reintegration activities.
