Community Overview - The Engineering Duty Community provides technical and business leadership in the design, acquisition, construction, maintenance, modernization, conversion, overhaul and disposal of ships, submarines, and onboard systems. The ED Community's roles is to sustain combat readiness and build a fleet of the future. Engineering Duty Officers (EDOs) are a cadre of specialized career naval officers. They are warfare qualified and technically educated through Engineering Master's Degree and/or Doctorate programs a the Naval Postgraduate School or Massachusetts Institute of Technology. EDOs are part of the DoD Acquisition Workforce and become DoN Acquisition Professional Members. Candidates with an endorsement from NAVSEA 00C will be prioritized to fill a need for more qualified EDO divers within the community. - Source Communities. Any URL designator or warfare qualified IWL or Special Duty designator. Nuclear trained SWOs, Nuclear Power Training Unit Instructors, and Submarine Officers are eligible to be considered for lateral transfer to EDO(N). Officers accepting lateral transfer to EDO(N) will be obligated to complete a CVN Principal Assistant (PA) tour. Officers shall establish a COBO contract that obligated them to this CVN PA tour as a prerequisite for accepting lateral transfer to EDO(N). - Degree/Requirements. Undergraduate BS in engineering discipline preferred, other STEM degrees considered. GPA should be not less than 2.7, or APC not greater than 234 (231 preferred). Body of undergraduate work must support enrollment (and successful completion of) MS degree in engineering or physical sciences applicable to the EDO Community (e.g., engineering disciplines, physics and computer science). - Warfare Qualifications. A warfare qualification is required. Officers without warfare qualification may be considered, with the expectation they will gain qualification via the ED Dolphin Program. - Clearance Requirements. Secret. - Waivers are required for any applicants who fall outside the above requirements. Contact the EDO OCM for any clarifications or waiver requests.
