Reserve Component (RC)
Engineering Duty Officer (EDO)

Welcome to the Reserve Component (RC) Engineering Duty Officer (EDO) Community Managers page. This website page is designed to provide helpful information on the RC EDO Community including general guidance on the accession process for prospective candidates as well as information for current officers.

Please contact the Reserve Engineering Officer Community Manager BUPERS-351, if you have any general questions regarding the RC EDO Engineer Community.

RC EDOs provide the Navy with experienced naval engineers that ensure our Naval and joint forces operate and fight with the most capable platforms possible. RC EDOs are involved with the design, acquisition, construction, repair, maintenance, conversion, overhaul, and disposal of ships, submarines, and the systems on those platforms. RC EDOs contribute greatly to the mission while enhancing their own civilian career.

RC EDOs, in America’s Navy Reserve, will find themselves in a wide variety of challenging and rewarding positions. From serving as Operation Center watchstanders involved in incident response efforts, to conducting salvage efforts of damaged ships, the opportunities for personal and professional growth are boundless.

RC EDO accessions are limited to the minimum standards outlined in the RC EDO Program Authorization (PA 201A).
Upon acceptance into the RC EDO Program, each candidate is required to complete a rigorous, three to five year qualification process.  This process is outlined in the NAVSEAINST 1001.3N.  There you will also find important career links along with community specific professional milestone information.

Accession, Affiliation, and Transition between Component Assistance:
There are three tracks to affiliate with the RC EDO Community: Direct Commission, Navy Reserve (NR) Lateral Transfer, and Navy Veteran (NAVET)/Other Service Veteran (OSVET) affiliation.

- Direct Commission Officer (DCO) Accession: If you are interested in joining the RC EDO Community with no prior commissioned service, the first step is to contact a local Navy recruiter at Navy Recruiting District Website.  Ensure the recruiter knows you are interested in the RC EDO Program (1465).  Once you have completed the initial steps towards gaining a commission, a member of our NR EDO Recruiting Team will contact you to complete the remaining community
screening steps.

- Lateral Transfer from Navy Reserve to NR EDO: If you are already a Naval Reservist, meet the requirements of the NR EDO Program Authorization, and are interested in transferring to the RC EDO Community, contact the Director of Reserve ED Recruiting for additional information and further guidance.

- NAVET/OSVET Affiliations: If you are returning or affiliating to the Reserves after a break in service, Recruiters will guide you through the process – helping you whether you qualify as a NAVET (NavyVeteran) or OSVET (Other Service Veteran) or through any of the other related entrance programs.  Contact a recruiter at Navy Recruiting District Website.

Upon acceptance into the RC EDO Program, each candidate is required to complete a three to five year Engineering Duty Office Qualification Program leading to the designation as a 1445.  Further information about the qualification program can be found in the NAVSEAINST 1001.3N and MILPERSMAN.
Please contact the Director of Reserve ED Recruiting if you have any questions regarding the Reserve Engineering Duty Officer Community.
