Training and Administration of the Reserve

The Training and Administration of the Reserve (TAR) Officer Program consists of Reserve officers on active duty responsible for managing, organizing,
administering, and training the Navy's Reserve Component.  TAR officers are assigned to billets worldwide providing
essential active duty support to the Navy Reserve in the areas of manpower management, personnel administration, mobilization
training, logistics, financial management, facilities management, and aviation support (references MILPERSMAN Articles 1001-020
and 1301-221).

TAR officers receive the same pay and benefits as their Active Component counterparts, to include an active duty retirement
upon completion of 20 years of satisfactory active duty service.  Depending on the community and eligibility rules, certain
community-specific bonuses and continuation pays are also available for TAR officers.

TAR officers are distinguished from their peers by the assignment of "7" as the last digit of their designator.  The following
designators makeup the TAR officer program:

  • 1117 - Surface Warfare
  • 1127 - Submarine Warfare
  • 1137 - Special Warfare
  • 1147 - Special Operations
  • 1317 - Naval Aviator
  • 1327 - Naval Flight Officer
  • 1207 - Human Resources
  • 1287 - Permanent Professional Recruiter
  • 1527 - Aerospace Maintenance Duty Officer
  • 3107 - Supply Corps
Information about applying for the TAR Officer Program can be found at the TAR Redesignation Board webpage.  The TAR
Officer Lateral Transfer / Redesignation Boards are held twice a year, typically in April and October.  The program is open
to both active duty officers on the Active Duty List as well as Ready Reserve Officers on the Reserve Active Status
List.  Members of the IRR, with the exception of VTU and SSOs, are not eligible.  For assignment information,
officers should contact the respective TAR Officer Detailer in PERS-46.
