There are two variants of Individual Augmentation (IA) for officers: the traditional/original IA and a Global Support Assignment (GSA).
IA billets are not assigned through PERS-41; they are managed by the operational chain of command. The parent command must accept a temporary loss of the officer assigned to IA; there will be no fill behind the officer until PRD. If you are interested in volunteering for an individual augment (IA), discuss your desires with your chain of command.
GSA billets are detailed through PERS-41 as part of the traditional slating process. GSA billets do not impact a parent command's manning, as the officer executes the GSA between "SWO" tours.
To ensure no officer is significantly disadvantaged in their career timing and development, the following IA business rules apply:
- SWOs will not normally be assigned an IA while on their division officer or department head tours. These tour are critical for every SWO as they attain the qualifications required for milestone screenings, command at sea and develop as the command's principal warfighters.
- SWOs on shore tours pursuing graduate education through a GEV quota, when assigned an IA, may request a PRD extension at their permanent duty station so that they have sufficient time to complete the GRAD ED after they return from the IA. PERS-41 will support this request for PRD extension around existing detailing business rules, most importantly that officers be in Department Head School NLT 7.5 years of commissioned service.
